Getting Ready for the UK Fly Fishing Season: Essential Materials for Early Season

The UK fly fishing season runs from March through September, and early season brings some of the most exciting — and challenging — fishing of the year. Cold water, selective trout, and the first hatches of the year demand well-tied flies and quality materials. Here's what we recommend getting on your bench before the season kicks off.

Key Early Season Hatches to Match

March and April are dominated by three key hatches across Scottish and UK rivers:

  • March Browns (Rhithrogena germanica) — one of the earliest and most important hatches on fast, rocky rivers. A size 12–14 on a dry fly hook is ideal.
  • Large Dark Olives (LDOs) — prolific on most UK rivers from late February onwards. Fish them as emergers or duns in sizes 12–14.
  • Brook Duns — common on smaller spate rivers and streams, particularly in Scotland. A simple parachute or CDC pattern in size 14–16 works well.

The key for early season is sparse, natural-looking patterns. Cold water means trout are selective — presentation and silhouette matter more than flash.

Early Season Tying Tips

  • Go sparse. Cold water trout have more time to inspect a fly. Slim, lightly-dressed patterns outperform bushy ones in March and April.
  • Match the size first. Get the hook size right before worrying about colour. A size 14 LDO pattern in the wrong shade will still outfish a perfectly coloured size 10.
  • Use natural materials. Rabbit, hare's ear, and natural dubbing outperform synthetics in clear, cold water. Save the flash for warmer months.
  • Tie a range of depths. Early season trout may be feeding anywhere in the water column. Have dry flies, emergers, and nymphs ready.
